The next Jurassic World movie might have found a director. Deadline reports that Universal is in “final negotiations” to hire Gareth Edwards to make the next entry in the dinosaur series.
Edwards is known for directing 2014’s Godzilla and the Star Wars movie Rogue One. His newest movie was 2023’s The Creator, which starred John David Washington. John Wick’s David Leitch was previously said to be in discussions before Edwards. According to the report, Edwards impressed producers Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshall.
As previously reported, the new Jurassic movie is described as a totally new take and will not feature the stars of the Jurassic World series, Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, or the main cast from the original Jurassic Park films.
The new film is looking to the past in some ways, however, as Universal hired the original Jurassic Park writer, David Koepp, to write the script for the next Jurassic movie.
The original Jurassic Park was about an island filled with dinosaurs that was supposed to be an amusement park of sorts. Obviously, everything went badly, and the sequels ramped up the spectacle more and more. There is no word yet on what the story might be. Similarly, there have been no casting announcements as of yet.
What we do know, however, is that Universal is confident enough in getting the movie made that it’s already assigned a July 2, 2025 release date for the untitled film. However, release dates regularly slip or change, so we’ll see how it all shakes out in the end.
